The advantage of working for someone else is that you will be able to use their facilities, equipment, and business system to make an income. You will also learn quite a bit because you will probably be working with other PC techs and may even have regular trainings. You will earn well above minimum wage, enjoy a benefits package, and enjoy job security.

When working for someone else, your computer repair jobs will depend on the type of business that hires you. You may be sent out to go to offices and homes to repair computers. You may work in a shop that specializes in computer repairs. Or you may work as part of an IT department in a multinational corporation.

Working for Yourself

The advantage of working for yourself is that you have very low overheads, do not need much equipment, and can charge from $75 an hour or more. You will, of course, have to focus on learning how to market your business for a portion of your working hours.

Working for Someone Else, Then For Yourself

Another possibility, of course, is that you can start working for someone else, learn the business without having to worry about how to get business, and then branch out to start your own computer repair business, either working from home or from a small store that you rent out.
